Portugal Sephardic Right of Return

Welcome to The Abravanel, Duarte and Verdugo International Sephardic Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the unique cultural heritage of Sephardic Jews around the world. Our mission is to educate, celebrate, and preserve Sephardic culture and traditions, and to support marginalized communities with compassion and inclusivity.

One of the issues that we are closely following is the Portugal Law of Sephardic Jews return. This law, which was enacted in 2015, allows Sephardic Jews who can prove their ancestral ties to Portugal to apply for Portuguese citizenship. The law was intended to right a historical wrong, as Portugal expelled Jews in the 15th century during the Inquisition.

However, in 2019, the Portuguese government announced that it would no longer accept new applications for citizenship under this law. The reason for this decision was not clear, but it has caused disappointment and frustration among Sephardic Jews who were hoping to reclaim their ancestral ties to Portugal.

At The Abravanel, Duarte and Verdugo International Sephardic Foundation, we believe that preserving Sephardic culture and traditions is important, and we support efforts to recognize and honor the contributions of Sephardic Jews throughout history. We also believe that inclusivity and compassion are essential, and we support marginalized communities, including the Sephardic Jewish community.

It is important to note that while the Portugal Law of Sephardic Jews return was a significant step towards recognizing the historical injustices committed against Sephardic Jews, it is not the only way to honor and celebrate Sephardic culture and heritage. There are many other ways that we can support and uplift the Sephardic Jewish community, including through education, cultural events, and advocacy work.
